August ’16 TBR – Espionage Theme

TBR August Logo

Hello everyone!

I am here to talk about the books I am hoping to read this month. I’M SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS THEME! I’ve been a huge fan of contemporary thrillers since I read the Gallagher Girls series by Ally Carter but I haven’t ever really delved deeper into those kinds of books. I read the Fixer duology and the first two books in the Conspiracy of Us series the last few months and now I have espionage and action fever and I’M SO PUMPED!

SO let’s get started!

First Order of Business:
The Lost and the Found and Stalking Jack the Ripper
by Cat Clarke and Kerri Maniscalo

Two ARCs this month. I’m a little nervous because I’ve been struggling with keeping up with my advance reader’s copies so I’m trying to cut back a little in the upcoming months. The first is from NetGalley which deals with abduction but I just don’t know how I’ll feel about it. The second book is not only one of my most anticipated releases but it’s also my first Edelweiss ARC! I’m so excited to read it!

TBR Jar Pick:
Magonia (Magonia #1)
by Maria Dahvana Headley

I haven’t had the best of luck with my TBR picks the last few months which can be seen as a good thing considering I don’t need more unfinished series on my list. But I’ve wanted to read this book since I saw that gorgeous cover and even though there’s a lot of mixed reviews, I’m still interested in it. Hopefully, I enjoy it!

Monthly Book Club:
Tiny Pretty Things (Tiny Pretty Things #1)
by Sona Charaipotra and Dhonielle Clayton

Gervan saw this book on Amazon with a Kindle deal at only 1.99 so he proposed it for this month’s buddy read. I’m really interested to see what it’s about. I know it has to do with ballet and it doesn’t look like the happiest of books but that’s as far as I’ve gone. Side note: I’m so glad I’m a blogger instead of booktuber because those are really hard names.

Read It While It’s Hot Challenge:
The Architect of Song & A Shadow Bright and Burning
by A.G. Howard and Jessica Cluess

A.G. Howard is one of my favorite authors, I loved her Splintered series and I’m really excited to read her new book! It’s a paranormal New Adult book. I haven’t really read a lot of them but I’m interested to see what she has created this time. The second book is to fulfill my Debut Author Challenge for this year but I don’t think I’ll be able to read this book this month since it comes out the 30th but I’m pretty sure I’ll jump on it as soon as it comes out.

 Potter Challenge:
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
by J.K. Rowling

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Cover

OMG GUYS! Aldii and I only have one more book to read! I’m so freaking excited but at the same time, I’m absolutely petrified. This is probably the only book where I’ll have no idea what will happen going on. I refused to watch the last two HP movies before reading the books so now I’ll be finishing this series and finishing off the movies!

Continuing Series:
Frozen Tides (Falling Kingdoms #4), The Raven King (The Raven Cycle #4) and Sea Spell (Waterfire Saga #4)
by Morgan Rhodes, Maggie Stiefvater and Jennifer Donnelly

Frozen Tides Cover   The Raven King Cover   Sea Spell Cover

I am on a mission to finish some series and that’s what this little section is all about! I’m slowly but surely warming up to the Falling Kingdoms series and I want to be caught up before the next book comes out. I’m really excited as well as freaked the hell out to finish the Raven Cycle. The last book ended with this huge revelation and I don’t want anyone to die! Then we have Sea Spell which is the last book for this saga and while I don’t love this series, it’s been super fun and entertaining and I can’t wait to see what happens!

Heist Society #1, #2 and #3
Heist Society, Uncommon Criminals and Perfect Scoundrels
by Ally Carter

Heist Society Cover   Uncommon Criminals Cover   Perfect Scoundrels Cover

I am a huge fan of Ally Carter. The Gallagher Girls series is one of my favorites of all time and I’ve been wanting to read more of her books for a really long time. So I’m taking the opportunity to do so now and you’ll see her again on this list!

Finishing School #1, #2, #3 and #4
Etiquette & Espionage, Curtsies & Conspiracies, Waistcoats & Weaponry and Manners & Mutiny
by Gail Carriger

Etiquette and Espionage Cover  Curtsies and Conspiracies Cover  Waistcoasts and Weaponry Cover Manners and Mutiny Cover

Gail Carriger is another one of my favorite authors. I am totally in love with her Parasol Protectorate series and this one is set in the same world except it’s 25 years earlier and all about a school that teaches girls young girls to be spies. It’s a like a steampunk, historical fiction Gallagher Girls and I’m so excited to read it! You’ll also be seeing more of her books on this list, fyi.

Embassy Row #1 and #2
All Fall Down and See How They Run
by Ally Carter

All Fall Down Cover   See How They Run Cover

See I told you there’d be more Ally Carter. This is her newest and ongoing series which is different from either of the two previous ones since it revolves around a more political style of thriller. I’ve heard mixed  things but I’m a huge fan of her work and the way she creates her main characters and I’m excited to read these books too.

The Custard Protocol #1 and #2
Prudence and Imprudence
by Gail Carriger

Prudence Cover   Imprudence Cover

I’M SO EXCITED FOR THIS SERIES! Yay for more Gail Carriger! This series is set a decade after the Parasol Protectorate and revolves around the daughter of the main character in that series and I’m so excited to read it! She was a spunky thing in that last book of that series and I can’t wait to see what she’s like as a teen and adult.

Rebel Mechanics (Rebel Mechanics #1)
by Shanna Swendson

Rebel Mechanics Cover

This book came out last year and I’ve had my eye on it since then. This is about a girl who becomes a spy in a historical fiction setting with steampunk. Honestly, this list is almost becoming a second steampunk list haha. I haven’t heard many things about this book but I hope it’ll be good!

Coin Heist
by Elisa Ludwig

Coin Heist Cover

After reading Smash & Grab last month, I’ve been interested in books about heists. Heist Society covers that but it’s a series and that’s a different dynamic so I’m interested in reading this since it’s another standalone. I want to see the differences between the two books and see if the plot in this one is not as farfetched.

So that’s it for this post! I feel like these are going to become on of my favorite kinds of books. Let me know if you’ve read any of these books and what you thought of them! Thanks so much for reading and I’ll see you on my next post!
